Lake Winnibigoshish (11014700) is located on the north side of Bena, Minnesota, on US Highway 2 in Itasca County. Commonly referred to as Lake Winnie this is one of the larger Minnesota lakes with a surface area of 56,470 acres and a maximum depth of 70 feet. Lake Winnibigoshish is located completely within the Chippewa National Forest.
The US Forest Service maintains several concrete public access locations: Third River off forest road 2131, West Winnie Campground, Tamarack Point, and Plug Hat Point. Birches Access has a double ramp with a common dock, and Richards Townsite has two concrete ramps with a common dock. There is also an earthen public access near the mouth of the Third River.
You can fish Lake Winnibigoshish for black bullhead, brown bullhead, burbot, northern pike, rock bass, shorthead redhorse, tullibee (cisco), walleye, white sucker, and yellow perch.

Lake Winnibigoshish is the fourth largest lake in Minnesota. It is commonly referred to as "Lake Winnie," and is located within the Chippewa National Forest. Lake Winnibigoshish is known for it's cool, clear water, even though the Ojibwe name for Winnibigoshish translates to "filthy water." The lake is considered one of Minnesota's premier fishing lakes, because of it's vast undeveloped shoreline. Visitors are attracted to the lake area for swimming, boating, fishing, camping, nature tracking, and nearby restaurants, museums, and golf courses.

The Chippewa National Forest is the first national forest established east of the Mississippi River. It consists of lush marshlands, rolling hills, and an abundance of diverse woodlands, along with almost 1,300 lakes. The forest has an extensive network of over 100 miles of trails, where berry picking, hunting, hiking, wildlife viewing, bicycling, and cross country skiing can be enjoyed.
In Bemidji, there are art galleries, golf courses, paintball and laser tag courses, geocaching, horseback riding, amusement parks, restaurants, movie theaters, and more. A must see for those who visit Bemidji, is Paul Bunyan and his Blue Ox, Babe, standing next to the Tourist Information Center. The one-of-a-kind statues are part of the National Register of Historic Places.
Another attraction to see in Bemidji is Paul Bunyan's Animal Land, home to nearly 100 animals representing every continent on earth. It is Minnesota's largest wildlife park/petting zoo, and includes an indoor learning center, gift shop, playground, picnic areas, and RV parking.
Cass Lake also offers many local attractions, including the Lady Slipper Scenic Byway. The Byway is the perfect place to take in scenic views of the Forest and local wildlife. Bird watchers love the variety of eagles, duks, swans, herons, and pelicans available to see. In Cass Lake, there are also annual Pow Wow that attract guests from all over Minnesota.
Deer River and Grand Rapids are also located not far from Lake Winnibigoshish, and have their own special attractions.
Deer River is a small peaceful town, known as the gateway to the Chippewa National Forest. The town also hosts a Wild Rice Festival and Wite Oak Rendezvous. There are plenty of outdoor activities that can be enjoyed in Deer River such as, hiking, camping, boating, golfing, and bicycling.
Grand Rapids is most commonly known as the birthplace of the actress Judy Garland. The Judy Garland Museum is a great place to visit, to celebrate Judy Garland and the interesting life she lived. Grand Rapids offers many different types of recreation like live theatre, arts, and cultural buildings.

High Banks Resort is located on the Northeast side of Lake Winnibigoshish in the Chippewa National Forest. The Resort consists of fifteen site camp grounds. There are both cabin sites and tent sites, with a nice population of tall trees. The Resort offers a restaurant, arcade, gift shop, convenience store, and wireless internet for all of it's guests.
On the grounds, there is a fish cleaning house, laundry facility, campfire rings, picnic tables, and charcoal grills by each cabin. There are many fun activities for the guests including, a playground for the kids, lawn games, kids craft programs, nature hikes and berry picking, weekly family activities, and a variety of special events.
Another popular resort is McArdle's Resort, also located within the Chippewa National Forest. This Resort has been catering to fishermen and their families since the 1920s. McArdle's Resort consists of 23 cabin sites that are fully furnished with all the amenities needed to have a comfortable stay on the shores of Lake Winnibigoshish. McArdle's also has a campground with five RV sites complete with full hook-ups. Shower facilities are available.
One of the common amenities at McArdle's Resort is it's heated in-ground swimming pool. At the Lodge, ice cream, pool tables, television, and other games are available to the guests. Unique to the Resort is the special dining option, the American Plan, that packages dining and lodging.
For fishermen, McArdle's Resort offers a launch service, fishing guide services, full-time dock attendants, fish cleaning, packaging, andfreezing, gas and bait sales, and fishing license. Fishing is welcome at the Resort during all seasons.
